West Virginia State Troopers say Eyewitness News viewers may have already seen Shannon Blankenship, 33, on TV before this video arraignment Monday. Troopers had made this security video available after the September 28th robbery at a Speedway in Branchland.
A woman clerk was abducted, handcuffed and taken away in a van, she was forced to strip, but eventually convinced the man to release her.
Troopers say the Varney man and convicted sex offender, knowing he was going to take a lie detector test, allegedly told parole officers he had tried to rape a woman, but did not.
That started the investigation rolling in his direction. No one had recognized him from the security video.
A magistrate set a $275, 000 bond on Blankenship for robbery, abduction, sexual assault, and as a convicted felon with a firearm.
State police may elect to upgrade the abduction charge against him to kidnapping, which carries a potential life sentence. Abduction carries a potential three to ten year prison term.
