Governor Cecil Underwood's memorial service was a time of mourning but also a time of laughter.
All the speakers, from Underwood's grandson to Governor Joe Manchin, told funny stories about the 86 year old. Son Craig says that's what his father would have wanted. Craig Underwood, Son, "I think I better tell a few jokes. I think it's be inappropriate otherwise." Manchin says Underwood leaves behind a legacy as a governor that he strives to reach. Gov. Joe Manchin, (D) West Virginia, "Just the word gentleman. I don't think there's any better definition in the name Cecil Underwood than gentleman." Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, (R) West Virginia, "He was a great statesman, family man." Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito attended the service with her father, former Governor Arch Moore. Moore and Underwood both started in politics more than 50 years ago. Being members of the minority republican party the two men got to know each other well. Arch Moore, Former Governor, "He made a significant contribution to West Virginia." During his terms as governor, Underwood helped create jobs and improve West Virginia's roads. Underwood also held education in high regard, a notion his children say they will always remember. At the end of the service, Underwood's family released a single dove to commemorate the life of a man who devoted so much of himself West Virginia and it's people. Chris Richardson, Underwood's Grandson, "Saying good bye is never easy, knowing that he was loved by so many people, ones that we know, ones we don't know. It really helps."
