Tim Dillon says no one ever wants to talk about depression and suicide.
"It is sort of a taboo subject," Dillon says. "That's part of the purpose of what we're doing here."
Dillon says he can't stand the silence anymore. Back in 2006, Dillon's 47 year old brother-in-law, Greg Wells, committed suicide.
"We knew he had a little bit of problems, but we had no idea the severity of it until it was over," he said.
But Dillon says the darkest night is just before the dawn. With that in mind, Dillon and his family are getting ready for their second "Out of the Darkness" walk, to help raise awareness, and bring families together who have been affected by suicide.
This is the second year in a row they have had the walk. Last year's event brought in about 200 walkers, and raised about $18,000, with the money going to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Dillon says it's not the money that makes the walk worth while...it's the families.
"I guess you could almost think about it as a big group therapy for a little while and just to open up dialogue and getting people to talk about all the issues that are related to it, get people help that need it," he said.
"If we can help them before they get to that point, if you can help one person or one family that doesn't have to go through the things that others have, then it's all worth the effort," he said.
This year's Suicide Prevention Walk is scheduled for Oct. 25.
Registration starts at 10:00 am at the picnic shelter in Ritter Park.
