Bigger Otter Elementary in Clay County has one nasty problem.
Students say, "Our school needs a bath!"
Megan Thorne says her daughter asked her a disturbing question when she dropped her off for school in the morning.
"She said who pooped in here? And I said nobody!"
Big Otter Elementary is a brand new school. It opened up last year for the first time and the stench has been a problem ever since. But Principal Pam Mullins says no one knows exactly what the smell is or where it's coming from.
Mullins say, "It's not consistent. It doesn't stay in one spot. It's here today gone tomorrow."
But after putting up with a sewage-like smell for more than a year, Thorne says they need answers now.
"Most schools have issues with different things like we can't afford new textbooks or we need new desks. But we have gases in our school that our kids are breathing." says Thorne.
Big Otter Elementary is an 8 million dollar school with a very stinky problem. And the kids say it's getting harder to concentrate when all they can think about is the smell.
A veriety of descriptions were used to describe the smell on campus.
"My school smells like sewer."
"It smells like poop and pee."
"Like dead skunk."
Clay County Superintenedent Larry Gillespie says they're keeping track of the smell, so hopefully, contractors will fix the problem.
Gillespie says, "We're doing everything we can, they just can't find exactly what it is. We will not put a child in danger."
And Thorne says that's her main concern.
"I dont know what can cause long term health problems, but I would like to see somebody do something." says Thorne.
Superintendent Gillespie says BBL Carlton, ZMM architects, and Robinson Plumbing are the ones that can help them solve the problem since they're the ones that helped build the school.
He says parents have been patient long enough and now's the time to get the problem solved.
