Kanawha County bus driver, Brian Slaman says, "Almost daily you will have someone attempt to pull out in front of you 'cause they don't want to wait behind a school bus."

Kanawha County bus drivers say it seems some people have no regard for the safety of children.

Slaman says, "Everybody doesn't wanna take the time to put safety first."

Over a hundred bus drivers met for a lesson on how to get all the information they need for officers to charge drivers who put students lives in jeopardy.

Kanawha County Magistrate Kim Aaron points out, "It's a misdemeanor, but there's a possible fine and up to 60 days in jail."

And drivers say they appreciate the support because of incidents in the past.

Transportation Supervisor, Jimmy Lacy says,"Last year we had an incident in Lincoln County with a little girl who was killed with the red lights being run. Bus drivers are one of the few people that can file criminal complaints, and they're supporting us in the job that we do."

Bus drivers are hoping to take what they learned in their sessions and put it to good use on the road.

Bus driver, John Friend says, "The general public needs more of an understanding of what sort of situation we're in. We have 60 kids behind us."

Friend also says he wants to put a stop to the unsafe drivers. "It happened to me twice last week, I had to cars run right through my red lights at the very same stop."

And Friend also points out that if people aren't more careful it could lead to a tragedy. "It's only a matter of time before someone becomes a statistic."

Bus drivers say they would also like to see license plates on the front of cars so that way they won't have to turn around to check license numbers if people illegally pass their buses.
