A 79-year-old woman was seriously injured when the car she was driving plowed into a tree and caught fire on US 1-19 in Charleston Monday afternoon.
Other drivers put out the blaze with fire extinguishers before emergency workers arrived on scene.
The elderly woman's car crashed traveling southbound on Corridor G near Hickory Road.
Rescuers say she appeared to have multiple broken bones.
The woman, who police did not name, allegedly told them she fell asleep at the wheel.
