Democrat Governor Joe Manchin and Republican challenger Russ Weeks faced off in the first gubernatorial debate at the Clay Center
Supporters from both sides felt their candidate did well. Republicans said Weeks made the points he needed to make.
"I think the debate went well," Weeks supporter Douglas McKinney said "It was very civil."
Democrats said Manchin brings a positive energy to the office.
"Governor Manchin is such a strong and positive governor for our state," Manchin supporter Virginia King said.
The first debate was sponsored by the West Virginia Broadcasters Association. Audience members were invited by the WVBA.
Another debate scheduled for Sunday will feature both major party candidates along with Mountain Party candidate Jesse Johson. It is being sponsored by West Virginia Public Broadcasting and the Associated Press.
