Textbook prices are adding up to a little too much for some college students.
West Virginia State University student, Sharee Campbell says, "Students are going without books now and that really sucks because they just can't afford it."
The cost of textbooks has steadily risen. It's gone up 110 percent between 1987 and 2004.
Student, Nadir Mirza says, "I personally paid 600 dollars this semester. I know some people who've paid 800 dollars even more than 1200 dollars."
A taskforce at West Virginia State University is discussing ways to lower costs. Some suggestions are already being implemented in the campus bookstore, which has to add an extra 25 percent to make a profit.
State's Bookstore Manager, Mark Akers says, "We try to get all the used books we can. We try to get them to use the same book as long as they possibly can, and we try to work with faculy to lower the cost of books."
Although the bookstore says they like to see textbooks leave their shelves, they say there are other options students can turn to if they want to save a little money.
Akers says, "They (students) can shop online and try to buy their books and other students that have the same book at school, they can swap with them."
Students say they understand the bookstore needs to make a profit, but a little extra money in their pockets would be nice.
Campbell says, "I would like to spend it on extra things, I have things I need to do. But ya gotta get your education."
The taskforce is currently working on finding ways to have teachers use the same book for more than one year, so students can buy used books for cheaper prices.
