The 22-year-old Nitro man made it into the parking lot of the West Washington Street business and apartment building before collapsing. Deputies said he had forced his way into an apartment behind Cross Lanes Floral even though he knew the residents. A scuffle over a gun followed and he was stabbed in the neck during the fight. A woman living in the apartment said her boyfriend grabbed a shotgun, but that the alleged intruder was already in their bedroom at the point.
The victim would later be identified as 22-year-old William Russell Barr of Nitro. Neighbors were shocked by the violence.
neighbor, Roger Yeager says "I was very startled, sad".
No arrest has been made because there were self defense elements to the stabbing. The case will be presented to the grand jury to determine whether or not the violent death was justified.
