October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
About 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime, that's about 200,000 annually.
There is really no way to prevent breast cancer but early detection is a key to beating the disease.
Doctors advise monthly self-breast exams and yearly check-ups.
Women over 40 should also get yearly mammograms.
Family history plays a big role in who develops the disease, so if your mother, grandmother or an aunt had breast cancer your chances of developing it go up.
Men can also get breast cancer, but the numbers are much lower than for women.
