In February of this year, two West Virginia Tech softball players filed a Title Nine lawsuit against their college, saying the women's softball team isn't being treated fairly.
Alexis Cox and Teri Harrison both demanded changes be made to the program. Tech recently brought the terms of settlement to the table promising improvements, but the girls lawyer says, the two refuse to sign. Current players say there was a foundation for the suit.
Sophomore player Erica Schoolcraft says,"We definitely needed a lot more done than what we had done." And sophomore Amy McLaughlin adds, "In the past I thought everything was very unfair, but now I can see things changing for the better this year."
Athletic Director Pete Kelley says the softball team is now in the midst of getting a brand new field. "Our motivation was not really the complaint or the suit that was brought against us. We're doing this because it's the right thing to do."
The girls are currently playing on a field they share with a baseball little league, but first year head coach, Micahel Scott says it's well worth it. "With the plans that I've seen and the layout that they're going to do it's probably going to be one of the best facilities in the state to play at."
Assistant Coach Lindsey Peltier also points out, "The facility to me, personally, doesn't matter as much, it's the game that gets played on it."
And players say the new field will be well worth the fight.
"I'm sure it's gonna be great." says McLaughlin. And Schoolcraft says, "I think it's good. I can't wait for our new softball field."
Alexis cox and Teri Harrison's lawyer has asked a federal judge to be removed from their case against Tech, if they choose to pursue more than the current terms of settlement.
