Charleston Police arrested 33-year old Shawn Elmore and his girlfriend 27-year old Charlene Bowman, both from Alabama, for allegedly robbing the State Credit Union on East Washington St. Tuesday morning.
Police say Elmore walked into the bank, presented a note, and then demanded money. He left with a bagful of cash and jumped into a car driven by Bowman.
The bank is just across the street from the State Employee's Daycare Center. Parents were shocked to hear about the robbery.
"It is very scary to think something can happen right next to the daycare," parent Greg Skinner said.
Children playing outside at the time of the robbery were taken inside once the staff found out about the robbery. Police say the pair went on a shopping spree after fleeing the bank.
"We recovered several receipts and bags from the mall," Sgt. Aaron James said. "They spent over $300 while they were there."
Police say they used a barcode on an envelope left by Elmore to track him down to an address where he was staying. Police arrested the pair after they returned to the home they were staying.
