Students taking these blackjack dealer classes in hopes of landing a job at the Nitro dog track say it involves much more than just counting to 21.
About 70 people trained to deal poker are graduating this week. Another 80 are taking these classes. But that's still short of the number Tri-State needs for its first round of hiring.
Ron Laduca with the Tri-State Racetrack and Gaming Center says, "We would like to bring on another 40 or so students from this area. We're trying to make an impact in this particular area. Hopefully we can get those students in the next two weeks. If we don't we're gonna have to go outside and recruit."
With the possibility of making $35,000 a year in salary and tips, along with insurance and other benefits, these people say taking a gamble on table games is worth the effort.
Charleston resident, Billy Bevino says , "I think it's exciting. I think it's going to bring a lot of stuff to West Virginia. A lot of business. A lot of extra money. It's good to see it happening in this city."
For information about the next dealer class which is set to begin August 4th, contact West Virginia State Community and Technical College at wvsctc.edu.
