Charleston Police arrested the father of a five month old infant that drowned in a bathtub in a house on Charleston's west side.
Vereen Edward Taylor, 36, was arraigned in Kanawha County Magistrate Court on one felony count of child neglect causing death Tuesday evening.
Paramedics arrived at 1440 West Washington Street around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon to respond to an unresponsive child. Five-month-old Zachari Taylor was taken to Women's and Children Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 2:05 p.m.
Taylor had apparently left Zachari in the tub for at least 20 mintues before finding him floating and unresponsive. When Taylor spoke to the police he said he placed Zachari in the tub on his back with the shower running and the water hitting his legs, while he went to feed his daughter, pay bills and check to see if his fiance had arrived. Taylor said they planned on celebrating his birthday.
Taylor bond was set at $100,000. His preliminary hearing is set for July 10, 2008.
