Department of Environmental Protection inspectors are trying to figure out where a strong smelling oily substance in the Kanawha River is coming from.
Emergency crews in Handley received calls about the substance around 10am Wednesday. Handley Police Chief Essie Ford says the smell was so strong at the London Locks workers had to evacuate their offices because it was making them nauseous.
Nearby, Pratt Elementary sheltered in place as a precaution after getting word the substance and smell was coming towards them.
No one was hurt because of the substance which inspectors believe is mostly likely gear oil.
