A Kanawha County woman who literally died and came back to life is making a miraculous recovery. Val Thomas is now out of bed and moving around, even though she had no brain waves for 17 1/2 hours.
"It's amazing how well I feel." said Thomas.
Val's ordeal began when her heart stopped at 1:30 a.m. in the morning at home Saturday. Doctors put Val on a special machine that induced hypothermia. Yet her heart stopped two more times while on the machine, she didn't have any brain activity and a ventilator breathed for her. In fact they needed to keep Val at a very cold state a good 24 hours, but that did not happen. She reached the right core temperature level 10 hours in and her son, Tim Thomas, decided to take her off life support just one hour later. Nurses say that is when the miracle happened. Val began to wiggle her toes and was breathing on her own.
Defying all odds she is now up walking around and is no longer using an oxygen tank. Val has not yet gone to Cleveland Clinic, she is currently waiting for a bed.
