Firefighters arrived quickly after a newspaper carrier spotted the blaze early Thursday morning in a condemned apartment building on Watts Street. The fire burned thru the roof threatening nearby homes, and now investigators say it's was arson.
The supposedly vacant building, owned by Rita Stanley, was already slated for demolition when it caught on fire. Firefighter say the building had not been properly boarded up and when they got inside found a women hiding in a closet. Firefighters got the women out safely, and say she is not a suspect in the arson.
The West Side still has multiple unsolved arsons, some dating back several years, but there is no apparent connection of this blaze to other fires. If you have information on this fire or others currently under investigation on the West Side, call the arson hotline at 1-800-233-FIRE.
