Two people have already plead guilty with five others facing indictments on various charges, including hate crimes, in connections with the kidnapping and assault of Megan Williams

A Logan County grand jury formally accuses five people of being involved in the kidnapping, torture and sexual abuse of 20-year-old Megan Williams. Police rescued Williams from a Logan County trailer last September after receiving an anonymous tip.

46-year-old Karen Burton is facing kidnapping and malicious wounding charges. She's also the only defendant being charged under West Virginia's hate crimes laws for alleging uttering a racial slur as she stabbed Williams. 24-year old Bobby Brewster is facing charges which include kidnapping and sexual assault. His mother, 49-year old Frankie Brewster, was indicted on charges of kidnapping, first degree sexual assault and conspiracy. Those same charges have been levied against 20-year old Danny Combs. A new defendant has surfaced, and authorities say an investigation identified Karen Burton's son, Linnie Burton, Junior. He's charged with misdemeanor assault. Two people have already plead guilty to kidnapping and assault. Karen Burton's 23-year old daughter Alisha Burton and 27-year old George Messer have been sentenced to up to ten years in prison and have agreed to testify against the others.

The case has drawn national attention, with African-American activists calling for everyone involved to be charged with hate crimes. However, the Logan-Boone chapter of the NAACP is pleased with how the case is proceeding. Megan Williams' mother Carmen tells Eyewitness News she is pleased with the way the court proceedings are going. Williams is scheduled to be a guest Thursday morning on the Montel Williams Show, which focuses on the survivors of hate crimes and torture.
