A Charleston man is fighting for his life after his throat was slashed in a New Year's Eve argument. It happened shortly before 11 p.m Monday night on Grove Avenue.

Police say 25-year old Charles Wild slashed 47-year old James Derrick's throat with a six inch kitchen knife. Wild claimed he was acting in self defense and that Derrick pulled a gun on him.

Derrick underwent emergency surgery at Charleston Area Medical Center Tuesday morning. He is listed in critical condition.

Wild is charged with malicious wounding.
