Last Update on 05-09-2008 at 06:19:15from Eyewitness News Online Eddy Arnold Dead At 89 FRANKLIN, Tenn. Eddy Arnold has died. He was 89 and just days short of his 90th birthday. He passed away yesterday at a care facility just south of Nashville. Arnold fell outside his home in March, injuring his hip, requiring him to have hip replacement surgery. A friend says Arnold's family was with him when he died. Sally, his wife of 66 years, died in March after a short illness.
FRANKLIN, Tenn. Country music has lost a legend with the death of singer Eddy Arnold at age 89. Arnold sold 85 million records in a career that spanned 60 years. He had 28 No. 1 records. his song "Make the World Go Away" was a crossover hit on the pop charts in 1965. Arnold became a pioneer of "The Nashville Sound," also called "countrypolitan," a mixture of country and pop styles. Arnold was the first country music singer to "cross over" to the pop field consistently. In 1966, he was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame. The following year he was the first person to receive the entertainer of the year award from the Country Music Association. Eddy Arnold Worked Until The End NASHVILLE, Tenn. Vince Gill remembers Eddy Arnold as, "Arguably the nicest man this town ever knew." Barbara Mandrell says Arnold was "a true gentleman" whose "contributions to the world of music will live on forever." George Jones says he dearly loved Arnold, adding "When I was about 15 years old, all I ever sang was Eddy Arnold's stuff." The chairman of Sony BMG Nashville says Arnold was talking about making another album just a few weeks ago. Joe Galante says, "There was a special kind of happiness about him whenever he talked about music." Among Arnold's recent albums were "Looking Back," 2002, and "After All These Years," 2005. Jewel Admits She Does Have Babies On The Brain NASHVILLE, Tenn. Right now, Jewel says her baby is her upcoming country album, but she does admit to having motherhood on the brain. She says "Ty and I are starting to think about it," adding "I'm definitely getting to that age where it's starting to become a prevalent topic at home." But she says her priority right now is her new album "Perfectly Clear," which hits stores June 3rd. Amy Grant Says Her Children Have No Interest In Performing NEW YORK Amy Grant says her children aren't interested in following in mom's career path. And she says "that's OK." She adds "I think they have a typical disinterest in what their mom does." She says she's not sure what they want to do. Jason Michael Carroll Will Take The Wife Out For Mother's Day NASHVILLE, Tenn. Jason Michael Carroll's wife and kids will be happy. He's making a pit stop home Sunday morning, just in time for Mother's Day. He says he'll be home less than 24 hours before he has to split again. But that's enough to take his wife to dinner and play with the kids. He says "we'll do some cards with crayons and cardboard before we have to take her out so she can have a card from the kids and myself." Marie Osmond Weighs In On The Miley Cyrus Vanity Fair Photos Country Music World Marie Osmond is weighing in on the Miley Cyrus Vanity Fair photos and she's putting the blame squarely on the shoulders of Billy Ray Cyrus. Osmond tells AOL Television that an experienced performer like Billy Ray should never have left his 15-year-old daughter alone during the photo shoot with Annie Leibovitz. She says "My parents never, never left us alone." She says "How do you say no to somebody like Annie, when you're a little girl?" People reports Miley's grandmother and teacher were on-hand during the shoot. The controversial photo shows Miley wrapped in a sheet with her back exposed. Trace Adkins Records Opening Song For 'Black Gold' Tv Series NASHVILLE, Tenn. Trace Adkins has recorded the opening song for a new series debuting on the truTV network. The song and show are both called "Black Gold." The series follows three drilling crews in their quest for oil in West Texas. The show premieres June 18th. Before he was a country star, Adkins, worked on offshore drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. Today's Birthday: Guitarist Mike Myerson of Heartland is 37.
