By: Jenifer McAndrews

Collecting sports memorabilia is big business these days. Baseball has generated a memorabilia business worth billions.
Mark Mench considers himself very knowledgeable about sports autographs. He's been collecting them for 30 years and knows how to spot a fake. But his batting average took a hit when he ran into Carl Myer.
Mark says Carl knew the business and spoke the language. Based on several conversations, Mench bought cards for Roberto Clemente – Steve Prefontaine and Mel Ott. When the autographs arrived, Mench says he did recognize them as fake immediately and tried to return them. That's when Mench says Myer threatened his life and left him holding the bag.
Mench was one of 56 victims who paid Myer more than $74-thousand dollars for items. Postal inspectors say when Mench filed a complaint – they already had a file started on Carl Myer.
Myer was prosecuted in federal court on mail fraud charges and is serving time in prison. Myer was also ordered to pay more than $65-thousand dollars in restitution.
Mike mench says the absolute best way to ensure not getting a fake is to seek out an athlete yourself and ask for the autograph.
