Gas Pump Warning
Jenifer McAndrews Identity Thieves Robbing Your Information at the Gas Pump
April 29, 2013
By: Jenifer McAndrews

ID theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in America. Between 8 and 12 million people could be victims in a single year. Investigators say thieves are now using extraordinary measures to steal your money.

Postal inspectors got a tip to search a hotel room after a suspect was arrested with several stolen cards. Inspectors found a spotting scope with a video camera pointed out the window. The camera was pointed at a gas station where investigators say the suspect had placed a skimming device on the pump.

According to Postal Inspectors, the man recorded 40 hours worth of transactions and was logging PIN numbers as he watched victims. The suspect had magnetic strip information on each credit card along with the numbers, the perfect storm for ID theft.

Postal Inspector Dan Taylor says, "Many times what these ID thieves are after is quick cash. With counterfeit credit cards we see a lot of cash advances basically bleed the card for every bit it is worth.”

Gas pumps are often a target. Here are some tips to protect yourself. Investigators say if you see something at a gas pump that does not look right, don't use it. Report any suspicious activity right away. And be aware of who is around you. Protect sensitive information such as PIN numbers and other banking information.

In this case, the suspect was convicted on ID theft charges and is serving prison time.
