![]() Keep the Family Fun in Winter Activities
The snow, wind, and sometimes rain keeps coming our way... it may seem like the best idea is to "veg" out at home and wait out the weather, but the spring thaw is weeks away, and kids have to keep moving. So in the meantime, pediatrician Dr. Joe Matusic says choose an activity that the family can do together- inside or out.
Dr. Joe Matusic, MD/Pediatrician Just go out and do something, but do it in a family way. Get a family activity. If you're playing badminton, volleyball, your playing soccer or shooting "Nerf" guns, no matter what, just have fun at it. And if you do it on a regular basis it will help. Dr. Matusic's advice is to set aside time on a regular basis for your activity. The exercise will get the calories burned off, and keep little bodies and minds fit. He says to make exercise part of your normal "to-do" list. Dr. Joe Matusic, MD Just like you set up a time for home work, set up a time for play. Some physical activity. That could in the form of a class that they're interested in, that gets the children moving, or fun things at home. And if your activities lead you outside during the winter, make sure you're ready for the elements. Dr. Joe Matusic, MD When you've had a lot of snow and kids want to go out and play, but then it's sunny, you've got not only sun coming down from overhead, but the reflection up from the snow. That's going to get them with a double exposure. So consider sunblock and sunglasses. Physicians affiliated with the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend at least 20 to 30 minutes of vigorous activity every day for your school aged children. If you have questions about the length of time your child should be exercising, or what types of activities are best, please talk to your doctor.
