![]() Reaching for Relief
You know them best under the names, Tylenol and Motrin. But whether you reach for the children's package of acetaminophen or ibuprofen, they can pack a hefty dose of relief. So if your child is suffering from anything from the pain of teething, or maybe a high fever from the flu, pediatrician Dr. Joe Matusic says, in some cases you can give a dose of both medicines at the same time for maximum relief.
Dr. Joe Matusic, MD/ Pediatrician Tylenol can be given up to every four hours, Motrin up to every six hours. They can be given at the same time. they metabolize differently. One is metabolized in the liver, the other in the kidneys. It's important to take note of how much medicine you're supposed to give your child, and when. Dosage is based on weight and you should use the dropper or cup enclosed in the package, not a spoon, so you give the correct amount. Dr. Joe Matusic, MD If you have pain or inflammation, Motrin is the preferred agent, but Tylenol is still fine. Motrin is just better and you could use both. I'd actually give motrin for it and if it wasn't strong enough, I'd add Tylenol. And don't let the small bottle of infant drops fool you... this medicine is concentrated. So a little provides big relief. But if your baby has a fever greater than 100.5, then call your doctor to discuss the situation. Get more vital parenting information with other Baby Steps. |
