![]() Tummy Time
The back to sleep campaign has babies on their backs when it's time for sleep. But when baby's awake, it's full speed ahead for learning! What to do? The answer is tummy time. A chance to get a different view on their new world. Not all babies love the idea, so they'll need a little help.
Dr Joe Matusic, Pediatrician One thing is when they're on their belly is they can't lift their head until a certain age. so it may be two [demonstrates], three, four, six months until they can lift their head all the way up. They want to see everything so you may have to lift their head so they can see the world Physical therapists say tummy time can help your baby strengthen her back and neck muscles, all while exploring her new surroundings. You can schedule tummy time for a few minutes, a few times a day... With you... so she can see you and bond-- starting when they can lift their head. Some medical experts say it helps develop motor skills... however Dr. Matusic says don't push the tummy time if it isn't working out. Dr. Joe Matusic, Pediatrician I think it's important to get them used too tummy time. Will it make a difference in the long run? No. But right now it is [making a difference]. Dr. Matusic stresses there is a wide range of normal when it comes to developmental milestones, especially those associated with tummy time.
