If you've been wondering when to start taking your baby or toddler to the dentist, it's probably already time to make an appointment. But as pediatric dentist, Ashley Patnoe explains, it's never too late.

A professional dental check-up and cleaning is recommended by your baby's first birthday. Dr. Ashley Patnoe sees children of all ages everyday. She says a "terrific toddler" visit is much like a well-baby check-up.

Dr. Ashley Patnoe
"Dental health starts at birth just like medical health. And prevention is key to a healthy body and if your teeth aren't healthy then your body's not healthy."

A quick exam is part of that first visit. Sometimes even an x-ray is necessary. And also be ready for an open, frank, discussion about several topics.

Dr. Ashley Patnoe
"Diet, safety in the home, habits like binkys, and thumb habits."

Poor dental habits, like going to bed with a bottle, or too much sugary juice can lead to denatal problems. But that's not the only danger to baby teeth. So is trauma.

Dr. Ashley Patnoe
"Accidentally falling and bumping teeth in those early months of walking is something we check for."

Dr. Patnoe says the key to keeping healthy smiles is making brushing habits enjoyable, by using this trick of the trade.

Dr. Ashley Patnoe
"Get to the childs level, on floor or couch, and make it comfortable so you can get into their mouth without making them feel threatened."

You can clean a baby's gums with an infant brush and water. And don't use a floridated toothpaste until age 2 or 3 unless your dentist recomends it.
