Tue-sday ratings...and beyond
...is it's good to have Buzz Lightyear, er, Tim Allen back where he belongs. I'll be the first to admit that my expectations weren't very high for the success of Tim's return to network television, a medium he all but dominated some 20 years ago, but he has happily proven me wrong. That's what I get for basing my hope on the opinions of "expert" TV journalists and prognosticators. It was repeatedly said that Last Man Standing was merely re-hashing Home Improvement with daughters instead of sons. That may be the case but the formula was one that was popular with the masses once and, although a couple of weeks does not a successful season make, it's a better start than most thought. Here are the fairly impressive numbers for the first 2 weeks:
* Week 1 - adults 18-49 3.5 rating
9% better than last year's occupant
The best 18-49 premiere for any new comedy on any network at 8:00 since 2006 and the largest total audience since 2004
ABC's highest rated show on Tuesday at 8:00 since 2009
And it even boosted the DWTS - Results show to its highest rating of the year.
*Week 2 - adults 18-49 3.0 rating (an expected drop but less than 15% which is a good sign and against stronger competition than week 1)
Other pleasant "surprises" on ABC and Fox so far in this young season have to include New Girl, Suburgatory, and Revenge. New Girl was the first show on any network to be picked up the entire season and is constantly outperforming Glee, which it follows on Tuesday. I'm told that Zooey Deschanel is the freshest star to hit network TV in some time. Suburgatory has become the perfect companion piece for the Wednesday comedy block with The Middle and Modern Family. Now ABC just needs one more sitcom to make it 2 solid hours of laughs as Happy Endings just isn't garnering the kind of ratings of the other 3. And Revenge has the "guilty pleasure" market cornered. It's slick, smart, moves at a good pace, and well acted. I just didn't think it would be the early season ABC drama (choosing from it, Pan Am, and Charlie's Angels) to be the most watched.
On the cancellation front, the only one from either network has been Charlie's Angels. The signs are pointing toward another 1 or 2 upcoming soon but we'll address that or those then.
