Wife Swap Originally Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m. on WCHS-TV8
Have you ever wondered whether the grass is greener on the other side of the fence? Two wives discover that it often isn't when they hand over the keys to their homes and literally switch families - but not bedrooms - for two weeks on the new reality show "Wife Swap." Already a critically-acclaimed smash hit in the U.K., "Wife Swap" premiered Wednesday, September 29, 2004, 10:00 p.m.on WCHS-TV8."Wife Swap" is not a competition or a contest. It is a reality show unlike any other, where the battlegrounds are the kitchens and living rooms, child-rearing is a subject of intense and heated debate, and the outcome isn't a cash prize, but a couple's opportunity to re-discover why they love each other and decided to marry in the first place. "'Wife Swap' is a perfect and exciting addition to the ABC brand of programming. With its themes of family values, parenting, marriage and keeping a household all presented in this unique reality show format, we'll be taking our viewers to the intimate heart of the American family in a way that television viewers have never seen before," said Andrea Wong, executive vice president, Alternative Programming, Specials and Late-Night, ABC Entertainment
In the first week of the swap, the wives move in with their new family and adopt their very different lifestyle. They agree to follow a manual written by the departing wife that sets out the rules of their new household - how they parent, shop, do the house work, manage their budgets and their social life. But then, in the second week, everything changes. The new wives take charge. They introduce their own set of rules and get to run the new household their way. It's a radical shock to both families. The results are explosive, enlightening and often very funny. This is a show about the things that really matter to families across America. At the end of the show, the two couples meet for the first time. In a highly-charged exchange of views, both couples make a frank assessment of each other and talk about what they've learned from the experience.
Expect tears, tantrums and raised voices as the wives clash with their new families. The participants include a multi-millionaire heiress from New York who hasn't worked a day in her life and has four nannies looking after her three children -- while she tends to her busy schedule of shopping, gym and lunches. She swaps with a blue collar woman who wakes up every morning at 5:30 a.m., to work as a wood cutter and a school bus driver.Another episode includes a strict, vegetarian, former U.S. Navy lieutenant's wife who home-schools her five children and disciplines them with a leather strap when they misbehave. She gets the shock of her life when she trades places with a loud, larger than life mother of a junk-food-eating, spoiled, TV-loving family who relish talking back to their parents. And in a later episode, a woman who lives an extremely ordered life writing extensive "to-do" lists and cleans her house for five hours every day (and hates pets) is pushed to the limits when she trades places with a fun-loving mother of two teenagers who hates housework and has twenty-five pets roaming free in her home. When "Wife Swap" premiered in 2003 in the United Kingdom, it was an instant television phenomenon. The program has won numerous awards, most recently the prestigious BAFTA (British Academy of Film & Television Arts) Award for best reality show and the Golden Rose for best reality program at the International Rose D'Or Festival, Europe's top entertainment television awards. "Wife Swap" currently airs everywhere from France to Australia and Germany to New Zealand. It has been sold as an acquisition or a format to more than twenty international territories. "It wasn't just the cheekily suggestive title or the provocative pairing of ill-matched couples that got everyone going," wrote the London Times. "Nor was it just the pressure-cooker tension, outbursts of pent-up resentment and door-slamming. There was emotional blood on the undusted carpets. Separated and living by other families' rules, each couple saw their life in a wholly new light." "'Wife Swap' is fascinating for what it reveals about the different ways people live their lives," said the best-selling Mail on Sunday. "But the key is in the end product: What people learn about themselves from others, and their capacity for change and growth." "Wife Swap" is an RDF Media production. It was created by Stephen Lambert and is executive-produced by Lambert and Jenny Crowther of RDF Media ("Faking It" and "Junkyard Wars") and Michael Davies of Diplomatic ("Who Wants to be a Millionaire"). Wendy Roth is the co-executive producer. Need to write? Also, get important information about How To Write To The Stars |
