Whose Line Is It Anyway? Thursdays on WCHS-TV8
Not a talk show, not a sitcom, not a game show, "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" is a completely unique concept to network television. Four talented actors perform completely unrehearsed skits and games in front of a studio audience. Host Drew Carey sets the scene, with contributions from the audience, but the actors rely completely on their quick wit and improvisational skills. It's genuinely improvised, so anything can happen.Along with Carey, Ryan Stiles ("The Drew Carey Show"), Colin Mochrie, Wayne Brady and a rotating roster of actor/comedian improvise their way through the half-hour of non-sto laughs. Other performers include Greg Proops and Brad Sherwood. Joining multitalented musician Laura Hall this year is guitarist Linda Taylor. Together, they will provide a variety of musical styles, which are often required in a sketch (e.g., a song about plumbers which must be sung to a reggae beat). New games include "Three Headed Broadway Star," in which three performers contribute only one word at a time to a Broadway-type song; "Song Titles," where the performers can only speak using titles of songs; and a game in which the performers read the show's end credits in a style determined by Drew. What began as a fun little radio program in London in 1988 has become American television's most unique comedy series. "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" gained popularity on the BBC radio when co-creators Dan Patterson and Mark Leveson took the show to Hat Trick Productions. After the show's first season with British lawyer-turned-comedy writer and host Clive Anderson, Ryan Stiles joined as a performer -- the same year the show won the British Academy Award. Canadian actor Colin Mochrie joined as a performer shortly thereafter. During the next five years, the show won the CableACE Award four times. In much the same way that "Saturday Night Live" has spawned a new generation of comedians, so has "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" in Britain, with many of its alumni going on to star in their own series. Dan Patterson, Denise O'Donoghue, Jimmy Mulville, Drew Carey and Ryan Stiles are the executive producers of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" Mark Leveson is producer. The show was created by Dan Patterson and Mark Leveson, and is produced by Riverside Productions, Inc. in association with Hat Trick Productions, LTD and distributed by Warner Bros. Television.
