Raoul Bova
Angelo on What About Brian

Raoul Bova
Raoul Bova is one of the most celebrated actors on the contemporary Italian film and television scene. Prior to his acting career, the Italian-born Bova was a professional swimmer. But when he didn't qualify for the 1988 Olympics, his two sisters convinced him to send his pictures to a talent agency in Rome. He began doing television appearances and met a director who cast him as the lead in the 1991 film, "Una Storia Italiana," a movie about the Abbagnale brothers, who are Italian Olympic rowing champions.

Bova then caught the attention of critics in the 1993 film "Cominico Tutto Per Caso," and achieved European fame with the film "Piccolo Grande Amore." He became an audience favorite after winning a "Telegatto," the Italian version of the Emmy Award, for his work in "La Piovra." Other Italian film credits include "La Finestra di Fronte," which won five David di Donatello Awards, the Italian equivalent to the Academy Award. The Sony Pictures Classics domestic release of this film, re-titled "Facing Window," was released in 2004.

"Avenging Angelo" (2001) marked the first time Bova participated in an American production, starring alongside Sylvester Stallone and Madeleine Stowe. He also played the role of St. Francis in the 2000 film "Francesco," and starred in the FOX summer blockbuster "Alien vs. Predator," with Sanaa Latham. Bova won the hearts of many more Americans starring opposite Diane Lane in "Under the Tuscan Sun" for Disney. He is also known for his appearances in award-winning commercials and campaigns for Gap.

Bova's artistic qualities, combined with a rare talent in making professional choices, have allowed him to work with some of the most influential names in the international film industry. He starred with Giancarlo Giannini in both "La Lupa" (1995) and "Palermo Milano Solo Andata" (1995); starred opposite Anthony Quinn in "Madame D" (2000); starred with F. Murray Abraham in "I Cavalieri Che Fecero L'Impresa," directed by Pupi Avati; and he performed in Lina Wertmuller's "Francesca e Nunziata (2001), opposite Sophia Loren.

Bova's favorite hobby is swimming, and he recently participated in the Malibu Triathlon. He also likes bicycling and taking care of his garden. He supports the organization Vento e Sole, which provides financial assistance in bringing bio-energy to a small Guatemalan village. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Chiara, their two sons and two pet dogs.
