Cynthia Martells Maggie on Veritas: The Quest
Cynthia Martells studied pre-law at Rutgers University before her mother encouraged her to pursue her true love of theater. She was accepted into the competitive BFA program at Rutgers' Mason Gross School of the Arts, where her professors included actor Avery Brooks.An accomplished stage actress, Martells received an Outer Critics Circle Award and nominations for both the Tony Award and Helen Hayes Award for her portrayal of Risa in the Broadway production of "Two Trains Running," opposite Laurence Fishburne. She also played this role at the Kennedy Center and Los Angeles' Doolittle Theatre. Off-Broadway performances include "Babylon Gardens" with Timothy Hutton and Mary Louise Parker; "Bird of Ill Omen" and "Thornwood" at the Circle Repertory Theatre; "Caucasian Chalk Circle" at the Public Theatre; the Young Playwrights Festival at Playwrights Horizons; and "Aven'U Boys," starring with Ron Eldard and Lilli Taylor at John Houseman Theatre. Martells has appeared in prominent regional productions, including "As You Like It" and "A Christmas Carol" at Princeton's McCarter Theatre; "The Screens" at the famed Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis; "Boy" at La Jolla Playhouse; "The Oedipus Plays," opposite Avery Brooks at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington D.C.; "Before It Hits Home" at the Arena Stage; and most recently she starred with Judith Light and John Glover in playwright and director Athol Fugard's latest piece, "Sorrows and Rejoicing," at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. Martells was a series regular on FOX's "Strange Luck," and was cast in the pilots of UPN's "Mercy Point," "Maggie Day" for Lifetime and NBC's "Suite Victoria." She has amassed guest starring roles on numerous critically-acclaimed series such as "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "ER," "NYPD Blue," "Law & Order," "Chicago Hope," "Sisters," "Touched by an Angel," "New York Undercover," "High Incident," "Brooklyn South," "Ellen," "Judging Amy" and "All My Children." Additionally she has worked on several telefilms, including TNT's "Broken Trust" with Tom Selleck; "Zooman" for Showtime, opposite Charles Dutton and Louis Gosset Jr.; NBC's "Bachelor's Baby" and "A Child's Cry for Help"; "Where Are My Children?," with Chris Noth and Marg Helgenberger on ABC; and the CBS movies "Here Comes the Sun," "Janek: Silent Betrayal" and "Blind Spot," starring Joanne Woodward and Laura Linney. Her feature film credits include "Nurse Betty" with RenŽe Zellweger and Morgan Freeman, "The Wood," "Gattaca," starring Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, "Dunston Checks In," "Drop Zone," Mike Nichols' "Regarding Henry," with Harrison Ford and Annette Benning, and "New Jack City." Martells resides in the hills of Los Angeles with her husband, their five-year-old son, two-year-old daughter, dog, three cats and pet bird.
