Diane Farr Jan Fendrich on The Job
As Jan Fendrich, the sole female detective in the "The Job" squad room, Diane Farr's character, who is also a single mom, has the smarts and bravado to go toe-to-toe with the guys whenever the situation demands. But that's no surprise to fans of Diane's work on MTV's "Loveline," which she co-hosted for two years and over 165 episodes. Diane added a distinct, quick-witted point of view to the formerly "all-male couch," where she proffered relationship advice to the lovelorn, confused and, on occasion, wacky callers. "The Job" also marks her return to ABC, where she guest-starred in numerous episodes of "The Drew Carey Show" last season as the woman who dated Drew, Oswald and Lewis. Born in Manhattan and raised in Brooklyn and Long Island, Diane got her start as a model at the age of twelve and became a success in that field. She studied theater at Stonybrook University in New York, and, while there, won a scholarship to a prestigious drama program in Loughborough University in England. She moved there and studied classical theater, graduating with a joint B.A. from both schools. She then globe-trotted for a year, traveling to Thailand, Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, the Middle East and continental Europe. Upon returning to the States, Diane made her television debut on "Silk Stalkings," and returned to the New York stage for a burgeoning career that included the lead role of Jackie in the Broadway show "No Place Like Home." Eight days after the show closed, she moved to Los Angeles and soon was cast as co-host on the cult hit "Loveline." "I did a Broadway show, moved to LA and no one cared," she laughs. "I got a job talking about sex on TV and everyone wanted a meeting!" Diane has worked steadily ever since. Her television credits include roles on "Bull," "Roswell," "Arli$$," "It's Like you Know," "The David Cassidy Story," "V.I.P.," "Fired Up" and "Unhappily Ever After," and she was directed by Scott Baio in a pilot, "Love Notes." Her numerous feature films include a starring role in "Sacrifice," with Michael Madsen, currently on HBO, and the forthcoming romantic comedy from Tribeca Films, "Little Indiscretions," due out next summer. Diane considers her most interesting and fulfilling work to date to be her two, ten-week stints teaching acting at a maximum-security men's prison in Los Angeles. She also began a similar program with unwed mothers in South Central L.A., and is in negotiations for a documentary about her prison work. Her first book, a comic look at single women in the 21st century, will be published Valentine's Day, 2001, by Little, Brown & Co., and is titled "The Girl Code." She has also written for Cosmopolitan, Jane and Soma. She resides in New York and Los Angeles and enjoys hiking, tennis and traveling to exotic countries, especially during historic moments.
