Pat Hingle
Chief Justice Amos Townsend on The Court

Pat Hingle in The Court Pat Hingle's rich career spans more than 50 years of film, television and Broadway. He has portrayed some of America's most notable and historical figures, including Benjamin Franklin in the Broadway smash "1776," J. Edgar Hoover in the 1992 cable movie "Citizen Cohn," Chief Justice Earl Warren in the 1993 cable movie "Simple Justice," Admiral William "Bull" Halsey in the miniseries "War and Remembrance" and Thomas A. Edison in commercials and in a one-man show which was performed at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC.

Hingle also starred in a revival of Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie," which he performed for Lady Bird Johnson at the White House. However he is perhaps most recognizable for his role as Commissioner Gordon in the Warner Bros. feature films "Batman" (1989), "Batman Returns" (1992), "Batman Forever" (1995) and "Batman and Robin" (1997).

Shortly after joining the Actors' Studio in 1952, Hingle made his film debut in "On the Waterfront." He also portrayed the overbearing father of Warren Beatty's character in "Splendor in the Grass." His role on "The Court" reunites him with Sally Field, who played his pro-union daughter in her Academy Award-winning performance as "Norma Rae."

Hingle's other notable feature film roles include "Hang 'em High," "The Gauntlet," "Sudden Impact," "The Falcon and the Snowman," "Brewster's Millions," "Baby Boom," "The Land Before Time," "The Grifters" and "Shaft" (2000). But he is most proud of the directors with whom he has worked: In addition to Elia Kazan, he has been directed by Tim Burton, Clint Eastwood, John Ford, Henry Hathaway, John Huston, Joseph Mankiewicz, Martin Ritt and Joel Schumacher.

Hingle's television credits read like an encyclopedia of the medium, with appearances in such series and movies as "Gunsmoke," "Rawhide," Stephen King's "The Shining," "The Kennedys of Massachusetts," "LBJ: The Early Years," "Homicide: Life on the Street," "Touched by an Angel," "Wings," "Cheers," "In the Heat of the Night," "Murder, She Wrote" and "The Equalizer."

He was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in the 1957 William Inge play "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs," directed by Kazan and starring Theresa Wright and Eileen Heckhart.

Hingle was born in Miami, Florida, but after his parents' divorce, he moved frequently as his mother sought work to support her family. He entered the University of Texas and majored in advertising. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he returned to school and studied radio broadcasting. He currently resides in North Carolina with his wife, Julie. Hingle is the proud grandfather of eleven.
