Mickey Glass on That Was Then

Bess Armstrong photo Born and raised in Baltimore, MD, Bess Armstrong inherited her love of theater and music from her parents. Everyone in the family played instruments and everyone, including her parents, acted in school and community theatre productions. Armstrong's parents were teachers in the independent schools that they had attended in their youth. Her mother taught the Classics. Her father, an English teacher, also directed the school plays, and that's where Armstrong got her start.

At Brown University, Armstrong majored in Classics as well as Theater Arts. By the end of her four years she had acted in, directed or choreographed more than 50 plays, both at school and in various professional summer stock companies around New England. After graduation she moved to New York to pursue a career as a professional actress.

Within six months of arriving in New York, Armstrong was playing Viola in Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" off-Broadway at the Perry Street Theater. Within a year she was starring in her first television series, "On Our Own," on CBS, which was one of the few series shooting in New York at that time. When the series ended after one season, Armstrong moved to Los Angeles to work in various movies of the week. She soon made another transition, from movies of the week to feature films. Her film debut was in "The Four Seasons," with Alan Alda. Other film credits include "High Road to China," with Tom Selleck, "Jaws 3-D," with Dennis Quaid, and "Nothing in Common," with Tom Hanks. Most recently she appeared in the film "Diamond Men," with Robert Forster and Donnie Wahlberg.

With dozens of television performances to her credit, Armstrong is best known for her role as Patty Chase, the mother of Claire Danes' character on the critically-acclaimed ABC series, "My So- Called Life."

When not working, Armstrong's life is full as a wife and mother. She and her husband, film producer John Fiedler, live in Los Angeles with their two sons. She bakes, sits on a school board of trustees, runs a Bible study class and a carpool. Acting is what she does to rest.
