Dakin Matthews Bishop Jerome on Soul Man Born in Oakland, California, Dakin Matthews has enjoyed being a busy actor in film, television, and theater. Dakin was educated in San Francisco, New York, and Rome. In his long career, he has appeared in over 70 episodes of network television as a guest and a series regular, on shows including "Down Home" and "The Jeff Foxworthy Show." "Soul Man" is his first portrayal of a clergyman on screen, although he has a degree in theology and studied at the Vatican. Dakin has also broadened his career with appearances in over 20 feature films, including "Nuts," "Clean and Sober" and "Funny Farm;" and a number of television movies, including "And the Band Played On," "Baby M" and "White Mile." He is also a multiple award-winning stage actor, most recently for his portrayal of C.S. Lewis in South Coast Rep's "Shadowlands." Beyond the stage and screen, Dakin has taught at Juilliard and is an Emeritus Professor of English from California State University-Hayward. He is also a playwright, director, and theater scholar who has published books and articles on Shakespeare and 17th-century Spanish theater. Among his former students are Kevin Kline, Patti Lupone and Annette Bening. Among his other credits, Dakin was artistic director of the Berkeley Shakespeare Festival and the California Actors Theatre; an associate artist of the Old Globe Theatre; and a founding member of the John Houseman's Acting Company and The Antaeus Company. Dakin currently resides with his family in Los Angeles. His hobbies include hacking away at golf and computers.
