Soul Man Formerly Tuesdays on WCHS-TV8 "Soul Man," from the creators of "Home Improvement" and starring Dan Aykroyd, returns to ABC to lead off Tuesday night after a successful mid-season run in 1996. This irreverent, half-hour family comedy marks Aykroyd's first primetime series in his 25 year career. Dan Aykroyd is Reverend Mike Weber, an unconventional widowed Episcopalian minister with a love for blues music, a checkered past and four high-spirited children. The best word to describe Mike's life is "chaotic," for it is not easy balancing the life of a single parent and dealing with the day-to-day responsibilities of a minister. But, Mike is devoted to both. Mike's life was not always this way. In the earlier days of his youth, Mike walked on the wild side, earning him the moniker, "Wild Child," from his fellow "Blacktop Vampires." Mike's favorite form of transportation was a motorcycle and his wardrobe consisted of jeans and a black leather jacket. He participated in more than his share of lawless activities and found his name to be popular in the less-than-honorable mentions of the local newspaper. Mike does not look upon his past as something to be ashamed of, but instead as a wealth of knowledge from which he draws when dealing with his parish and his progeny. At home, Mike's rambunctious children always offer a crisis to be dealt with, whether eight-year-old Meredith is torturing her little brother Fred or 11-year-old Andy is attempting a crude, weird experiment. Mike's greatest challenge seems to lie in his relationship with his oldest son, 14-year-old Kenny, who is unwilling to acquire an appreciation for his father's vocation. As if Mike doesn't have enough fires to put out on the home front, there's also the matter of his church colleagues. Bishop Jerome is a staid officer of the church who questions Mike's unorthodox way of doing things on a daily basis. The bishop's main goal in life is to see his name grace the side of a building somewhere in the diocese. Todd Farmer is a recent divinity school graduate who is eager and ready to serve. Opinionated and headstrong, Todd knows much about the Book but squat about life. Nancy Boyd is Dan's clerical assistant. Nancy, a year out from under the sting of a divorce, brings with her kinship for all things betrayed, a secular questioning point of view and a box of 73 self-help books. Despite all the obstacles he must hurdle, Mike is very happy; and when the going gets a little tough, he always has his sense of humor to see him through. He cherishes the knowledge that in some small way he is helping to make a difference. Cast: Dan Aykroyd as Mike Weber, Kevin Sheridan as Kenny Weber, Brendon Ryan Barrett as Andy Weber, Courtney Chase as Meredith Weber, Spencer Breslin as Fred Weber and Dakin Matthews as The Bishop. The roles of Todd Farmer and Nancy Boyd are still to be cast. "Soul Man" was created by Matt Williams, David McFadzean and Carmen Finestra, who executive produce along with Dan Aykroyd. David Richardson is co-executive producer; Danny Smith is supervising producer; the series is produced by Caterina Nelli, with Gayle S. Maffeo as producer. "Soul Man" is a production of Wind Dancer Production Group in association with Touchstone Television.
