Judd Hirsch Baxter on Regular Joe
Judd Hirsch grew up in New York, studied engineering at The City College of New York and architecture at Cooper Union. Shortly thereafter he began his acting studies at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts and especially at the HB Studio in New York.He began his stage career in 1964 at The Woodstock Playhouse in Woodstock, New York, playing Murray Burns in Herb Gardner's "A Thousand Clowns." Subsequent roles in the 1970s and ‘80s included the comic telephone man in Neil Simon's "Barefoot in the Park," Harold Wonder in Bruce Jay Friedman's "Scuba Duba" and Matt Friedman in Lanford Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, "Talley's Folly," which he created. In 1985 he starred alongside his friend, Cleavon Little, in Herb Gardner's "I'm Not Rappaport," winning the Outer Critics Circle Award for the role. Hirsch won another Outer Critics Circle Award and a coveted Tony for creating the role of Eddie Ross, the overpowering bartender in Herb Gardner's "Conversations with My Father." Other theatrical undertakings include "A Thousand Clowns" for the Roundabout Theater and "Art" on Broadway, London's West End and in the show's national tour. His television career is equally impressive, with roles in the Emmy Award-winning telefilm "The Law," the critically-acclaimed drama "Delvecchio" and the hit comedy "Taxi," for which he was nominated for a Best Actor Emmy every season of the show's run, winning it twice, in 1981 and 1983. He also starred in the TV sitcoms "Dear John" and "George and Leo," with Bob Newhart. Feature film credits include an Academy Award-nominated role in "Ordinary People," "Without a Trace," "Teachers," "The Goodbye People," "Running on Empty," "Independence Day," "Man on the Moon" and "Out of the Cold."
