In 1995 he took time to create a curriculum to teach Media Literacy to children as an antidote for violence in the media. For the next few years he taught his three-week seminars in the classroom each semester, which led to his being named the Honorary Membership Chair for the California State PTA. In 1999 he and his wife founded the Boys and Girls Club of Malibu, which today serves over 500 kids both during and after school hours and is located on site at Malibu High School. A strong supporter of environmental groups such as Waterkeepers, Heal the Bay, The Natural Resources Defense Council and Youth for Environmental Sanity, Stern is also a member of the board of directors for The Creative Coalition and the Malibu Foundation for Youth and Families.
