Susan Brown
Gail Baldwin on Port Charles

Carly Schroeder photo Susan Brown plays the venerable psychiatrist Dr. Gail Baldwin, mother to Scott Baldwin (Kin Shriner), adoptive mother to Monica Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson) and wife to Lee Baldwin (Peter Hansen), to whom her character has been married for over 20 years. Initially joining "General Hospital" in 1977, the Emmy-nominated Brown took her character to "Port Charles" in 1997 and continues to work on both shows.

Born and raised in San Francisco, California, Ms. Brown headed south after high school to the University of Southern California to study drama. While there she had the opportunity to study with William DeMille and later perform in her first professional play, "Ethan Frome," at the Players Ring Theater.

After a run in Los Angeles, Ms. Brown left for New York to pursue acting and additional studies at the American Theater Wing. After ten years of summer stock, off-Broadway and television, she returned to Los Angeles to perform at the Mark Taper Forum in such plays as "Savages" and "Meeting by the River" with Sam Waterston. She also performed in the national tour of "Inherit the Wind," with Melvin Douglas, and appeared on Broadway in the play "The Girl in the Freudian Slip," with Marjorie Lord and Alan Young.

After her foray into theater, Ms. Brown began working in television with guest-starring roles in "Frasier," "Crime and Punishment," "Murder, She Wrote," "Barney Miller," "The Hogan Family" and "Beverly Hills, 90210," to name a few. She has also starred on the daytime dramas "The Young Marrieds," "Return to Peyton Place," "Bright Promise" and "As the World Turns." As part of a number of telefilms, Brown also had the opportunity to portray First Ladies Nancy Reagan in "The James Brady Story" and Pat Nixon in "The Final Days."

Her feature film credits include "Papa Was a Preacher," "The Klansman," with Lee Marvin, and "The Andromeda Strain," based on the Michael Crichton novel.

For the past ten years Ms. Brown has explored her desire to also work as an interior designer. After initially completing décor with longtime friend Kathy L'Amour, she began designing for fellow actors Concetta Tomei, Anne Archer and Kin Shriner, along with songwriters, businessmen and entertainment industry executives.

Brown currently resides in the San Fernando Valley.
