Charlotte Ross
Detective Connie McDowell on NYPD Blue

Charlotte Ross photo Charlotte Ross is a talented actress possessed of invariable talent, range and beauty, all in clear evidence as she joins the cast of ABC's critically acclaimed "NYPD Blue." She portrays tough, Irish Detective Connie McDowell, taking over as the drama's female lead upon Kim Delaney's departure.

Previously Ross starred in the Showtime series "Beggars and Choosers." One of the last projects developed by Brandon Tartikoff, this affectionate satire was inspired by his experience in the television business and centered on characters attempting to survive in that chaotic and backstabbing world. Ross portrayed a Machiavellian character who was ruthless, quick-witted and ruled by blind ambition.

Ross also starred in the television series "Trinity," created by John Wells, and the NBC mini-series "A Will of Their Own." She had lead roles in "The Five Mrs. Buchanans" and "The Heights" (for which she received a Gold Record), and in the telefilms "A Kiss So Deadly," "Fall Into Darkness," "She Says She's Innocent" and "Dark Waters." Earlier she garnered two Emmy Award nominations for her role on "Days of Our Lives." Ross has had a plethora of notable guest appearances on a variety of hit series, most recently guest-starring as Dr. Frasier Crane's love interest in the Valentine's Day special of "Frasier." She also portrayed a manic-depressive on "Birdland," opposite Brian Dennehy, a strung-out drug addict on "ER" and the recurring role of a slain policeman's wife on "NYPD Blue."

A chameleon in her trade, Ross has also appeared in such films as "Touch and Go," with Michael Keaton, "Love and a .45," opposite Gil Bellows and Renee Zellwegger, "Savage Land," "Foreign Student" and "Donuts."

Ross was discovered in a theatre performance at the age of 13. At New Trier High School she continued her study in performing arts and trained at the Steppenwolf Theater and Second City in Chicago. Eventually parlaying her acting prowess onto the Los Angeles stage, she studied with renowned acting coach Roy London and performed at the Pasadena Playhouse and Tiffany Theatres. Among her many talents, she also possesses an amazing singing voice. She studied opera for five years and her talent has been highlighted in almost every character that she has portrayed.

Ross has collaborated with the Jane Goodall Institute, SPCA and PETA for many years. While on location in Puerto Rico, she adopted a homeless dog named "Taco" who is now friend to her yellow lab, "Alex," and her one-eyed Pekinese, "Katy."
