Chris Bury Correspondent, ABC News "Nightline"
Chris Bury has been a correspondent for ABC News "Nightline" since January, 1993. He also serves as a substitute anchor on "Nightline." He joined ABC News in 1982 as a general assignment correspondent based in Chicago.Mr. Bury was the correspondent for "The Clinton Years," the multi-part series airing on ABC News "Nightline" and PBS's "Frontline" in January, 2001. He reported extensively on the Clinton administration, including covering the 1992 Clinton campaign for "World News Tonight." Mr. Bury has covered many national stories, including the 2000 Democratic and Republican conventions, impeachment and Senate trial of President Clinton, the 1996 presidential race, the Clinton White House, Whitewater, the Asian economic crisis, the political battle over health care reform, the American military policy in Somalia, gays in the military and the siege of the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, and its political aftermath. He has reported from South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia on the 1998 economic crisis in Asia. He has also reported from Haiti on the political turmoil there, and from Israeli-occupied territories on the Hebron massacre. Mr. Bury reported extensively on the explosion of TWA Flight 800 and, in early 1995, on the bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City. During the 1992 presidential election, Mr. Bury traveled full-time with Bill Clinton, covering the early primaries, the Democratic convention and the November election for "World News Tonight." During his career at ABC News, Mr. Bury has filed a number of international and domestic reports for various ABC News broadcasts. In 1990 he covered the U.S. preparation for Operation Desert Shield from Saudi Arabia. He also reported on the terrorist attack on TWA Flight 840 from Rome and Athens, the U.S. attack on Libya and, from London, on the British royal family. From 1983-84 he reported on the Democratic and Republican national conventions, Gary Hart's presidential campaign, Chicago politics and on the turnaround of Chrysler under Lee Iacocca. In 1982 he covered such stories as the dioxin poisoning in Times Beach, Missouri, the Teamsters bribery trial and Roy Williams' conviction, the Catholic Bishops nuclear freeze issue and the flooding and tornadoes in Texas, Missouri and Illinois. Prior to joining ABC News, from 1981 to 1982, Mr. Bury was a reporter with KPRC-TV, Houston. Previously he was the co-host and principal reporter for "EXTRA," an award-winning television magazine program at KTVI-TV in St. Louis. Before joining KTVI-TV in January, 1981, he was a political and investigative reporter for WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee. Mr. Bury's accolades include three national Emmy Awards for his work at "Nightline." He is the recipient of an Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio-Television News Directors Association for continuing coverage of the Whitewater story. His other awards include an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Journalism School Award for Outstanding Television Reporting for a "World News Tonight" series on children in poverty, and a 1998 Distinguished Service to Journalism award from the University of Wisconsin. While he was at WTMJ-TV, Mr. Bury received a Wisconsin UPI Award for an investigative documentary on the car insurance industry in Wisconsin. The program received a first-place award in the Outstanding Television Documentary -- Investigative Reporting category. Mr. Bury was an instructor at Marquette University, College of Journalism, from 1979-1980. He began his career in journalism in 1975 as a reporter for WLCX-Radio in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Mr. Bury received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Southern Illinois University, and a Master of Arts in the same subject from the University of Wisconsin.
