Regis Philbin Host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire
During the 40 years since Regis Philbin first stepped in front of the camera, he has enjoyed more success with more shows than possibly any other individual on television. In May, 2001, the 28th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards honored him with an Emmy as Outstanding Game Show Host for "Millionaire," and another Emmy as Outstanding Talk Show Host for his syndicated program, "Live with Regis."Additionally he received the 2001 TV Guide Award as Personality of the Year, a Broadcasting & Cable Lifetime Achievement Award, and New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani presented him with a Crystal Apple Award for his contributions to the New York television industry. During his very first talk show, "The Regis Philbin Show," on KGTV-TV (San Diego), he created the routine that would ultimately become his trademark -- "host chat," an element which endures today on his daily morning show. Mr. Philbin also helmed another critical and ratings success, "Philbin's People," which aired Saturday nights on KHJ-TV (Los Angeles) and received an Emmy Award. He hosted "Regis Philbin's Saturday Night in St. Louis," which enabled the CBS affiliate to win the time slot over "Saturday Night Live"and, upon returning to Los Angeles, at KABC-TV Regis took "A.M. Los Angeles" from the ratings cellar to number one, where it remained for his seven-year tenure. At the national level, he replaced Steve Allen on Westinghouse's syndicated late-night talk show, marking his first time as a national host. He served as Joey Bishop's sidekick on "The Joey Bishop Show" and helmed "The Regis Philbin Show," a daily 30-minute program which received an Emmy for Outstanding Daytime Variety Series. He also served three years as host of the three-hour morning show, "Tempo," on KHJ-TV (Los Angeles). Mr. Philbin has worked on two other ABC game shows, hosting "The Neighbors" and as a field reporter for "Almost Anything Goes." He also hosted a magazine show for Lifetime, "Regis Philbin Lifestyles" and, when the show moved to primetime as "The Regis Philbin Show," it became the highest-rated program in the history of Lifetime. In 1983 he returned to his native Manhattan and created "The Morning Show" on WABC-TV. Kathie Lee Gifford joined him in June, 1985, and their chemistry sent the ratings soaring, making the show the long-time number-one program in the New York market. In September, 1988, the program debuted in national syndication, the title was changed to "LIVE! With Regis & Kathie Lee" and it matched its local success by becoming a national ratings powerhouse. Mr. Philbin also has a news background, having worked as a news and sports writer at KCOP-TV (Los Angeles), a news reporter for KSON Radio and as a reporter, substitute anchor and sportscaster at Channel 8 in San Diego. He also served as a feature reporter and a permanent anchor at Channel 10 in San Diego. Mr. Philbin has also branched into areas other than broadcasting: He has written three bestsellers, including a memoir, "I'm Only One Man" -- his second memoir, "Who Wants To Be Me?," hit bookstores in September, 2000 -- and he launched a clothing line inspired by his sartorial look on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." A native of New York City, Mr. Philbin is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and received an honorary doctor of laws degree for his contributions to Notre Dame and South Bend. Mr. Philbin and his wife, Joy (a frequent "Live" co-host and host of her own interior decorating show, "Haven"), live in Manhattan and Connecticut. They have two grown daughters, Joanna and Jennifer.
