Robert Joy Frank Coones on MDs
Robert Joy grew up in Newfoundland, where he studied English Language and Literature. In school he fell in love with theatre and, after graduating from college, he toured with the Newfoundland Traveling Theatre Company, playing farce in the evenings and the Cowardly Lion in "The Wizard of Oz" in the afternoons. In 1974 Joy joined the Newfoundland comedy group CODCO. The next four years with that group -- where he worked as writer, composer and musician -- were also his seminal years as an actor. In 1978 he landed the role of Peter in a Toronto production of "The Diary of Anne Frank," with Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson. When the production moved to New York, Joy came with it. The New York Times named him as one of the New Faces of the Theatre Season. His first film roles were in "Atlantic City," "Ragtime" and "Ticket to Heaven." He also appeared as Madonna's boyfriend in "Desperately Seeking Susan," and had roles in many other films, including "Harriet the Spy" and "Fallen," with Denzel Washington. Television audiences know Joy as one of the leads in the HBO comedy series, "The High Life." He has also guest-starred on many other television shows, including "The Guardian, ABC'S "Gideon's Crossing," "Star Trek: The Voyager," "Law & Order," "New York Undercover" and "Becker."
