Tim Allen Tim Taylor on Home Improvement
On a dare from a friend, Tim Allen made his first stand-up appearance in 1979 at Detroit's Comedy Castle, which he still considers his "comedy birthplace." He went on to not only play every major national comedy club and sell out concert engagements all over the country, but has become a major television and motion picture star, as well as a best-selling author. For his work on "Home Improvement," Tim won the People's Choice Award naming him Favorite Male Television Performer every year from 1992 through 1996; and from 1993 through 1995, won the title of America's Favorite TV Personality from the Harris Poll. In 1995, he received the Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series and was again nominated in 1996 for the same category. That same year, he was awarded the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards coveted Kids Choice Hall of Fame. In 1996 and 1997, he was also named the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Favorite TV Actor. In addition to the awards he has received for his work on "Home Improvement," he was recognized in 1995 by the film industry for his starring role in the top-grossing movie, "The Santa Clause," for which he received the People's Choice Award for Favorite Actor in a Comedy Motion Picture. In addition, he received the Blockbuster Entertainment Award as Favorite Male Newcomer, Theatrical. Even though "Home Improvement" is Tim's first series, he has been nominated twice for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, and was one of the co-hosts of the 1992 Primetime Emmy Awards presentation. Other television work includes appearances on five cable specials: "Tim Allen: Men Are Pigs," "Comedy Club All-Stars II," "Tim Allen Rewires America," "Comedy Club All-Stars VII," which he hosted; and "Just For Laughs Festival," for which he won a 1990 ACE Award as Best Performer in a Comedy Special. Born in Denver, Colorado, Tim was one of seven brothers raised by his mother. His upbringing gave him a woman's perspective, he says, "which was basically yelling and screaming at that point, because it's hard to raise boys." When he was 13, the family moved to the Detroit suburb of Birmingham. After graduating from Western Michigan University with a degree in television production, he worked as a creative director for a small advertising firm in Detroit. He soon moved from behind the camera to in front of it as a performer and commercial spokesman. He still keeps his hand in advertising with the company he formed in 1984, Boxing Cat Productions, which is involved in the graphic arts, design and production of commercials. Tim's second movie was Walt Disney Pictures' "Toy Story," the first film to be entirely animated using computers. Tim was the voice of Buzz Lightyear, the latest, greatest, spaceman action figure. His next film venture was the 1997 box-office hit, Disney's "Jungle2Jungle," in which he starred along with JoBeth Williams and Lolita Davidovitch. During the recent summer hiatus, he filmed the romantic comedy, "For Richer or Poorer." Tim revealed his philosophy about male behavior -- replete with comedic meditations and anecdotes -- in his first book, "Don't Stand Too Close to a Naked Man," which topped the New York Times Bestseller List for several weeks. His second book published in 1996, entitled "I'm Not Really Here," takes a humorous look at men in mid-life -- and their relationships to wives, children, friends, the universe and God. Tim recently introduced his own Signature Hammer, embossed with this trademark logo "RRR." Based on its success, he launched his own Signature Tool Line which includes a tool line for children. In his spare time, he likes to invent things that, in his words, "change the course of history." He also likes to play with cars, work on new designs, and frolic with his family and friends. He's married and has a seven-year-old daughter. The family is "semi-bicoastal": They have a home in the Los Angeles area while maintaining the family residence in Detroit.
