Extreme Makeover: Home Edition cast
Put together one very run-down house, a deserving family, several opinionated designers, seven days and what do you get? The answer is - "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition."

The show's successful first season garnered an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Reality Program. As this ratings-rich reality series enters its second season, each self-contained episode features a race against time on a project that would ordinarily take at least four months to achieve, involving a team of designers, contractors and several hundred workers who have just seven days to totally rebuild an entire house - every single room, plus the exterior and landscaping.

The lives of the lucky families are forever changed when they learn that they have been selected to have their home walls moved, their floors replaced and even their facades radically changed. The result should be a decorator's delight... if it can be done in time.

Each episode begins with team leader Ty Pennington's now-famous "Good morning!" wake-up call, when he, along with the other designers, surprises the unsuspecting family with news that their home has been chosen to receive a makeover. Then viewers witness not only the unbelievable transformation of the house, but during the final and emotional reveal, they see how the home makeover has impacted the lives of the deserving families.

Last season "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" was able to bring extreme happiness to several families. Some of those projects included enlarging the home of a couple expecting triplets, rebuilding a house for eight children who had just lost their parents, giving a facelift to an entire community whose homes were flooded during a hailstorm, and remodeling the living space of a wheelchair-bound young man by making it more accessible -- which included the installation of an elevator. In addition the makeover team did a special live episode, during which they remodeled the New York apartment of two firefighters -- in just 12 hours!

Looking forward, new episodes will include tackling the virtually impossible job of razing a house and building a new one from the foundation up. In this episode, when a mother was shot and killed by a gang member's stray bullet, the oldest son took in his five siblings. Although he and his wife had four young children of their own, he moved this now-large family -- totaling 11 people -- into a major fixer-upper built in 1905.

In another upcoming episode, a widower who is caring for his eight children (ages six to 18) hasn't been able to keep up with the needed repairs on their three bedroom house. Even though his kids are good students and do their chores around the house, Dad feels like he isn't doing enough for them. In his letter to the show, he wrote: "I'm so proud of them for their activities and sacrifices. With tears in my eyes, I ask for your help for my children - they should have it better."

The design team who work their creative magic on the homes are team leader and carpenter Ty Pennington, Paul DiMeo (carpentry/nuts & bolts), Paige Hemmis (carpentry/creativity), Tracy Hutson (shopping/style), Michael Moloney (interiors/glamour), Constance Ramos (building/planning), Ed Sanders (construction), Tanya McQueen (designer), Daniel Kucan (designer) and Preston Sharp (exteriors/big ideas).

"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" is produced by Endemol USA, a division of Endemol Holding. David Goldberg is President of Endemol USA. The series is executive-produced by Tom Forman and Craig Armstrong and premiered December 3, 2003, on the ABC Television Network.
