Ellen Formerly on Wednesdays on WCHS-TV8 ![]() The Cast of Ellen "Ellen" made history on April 30, 1997 when Ellen Morgan, played with a masterful mix of warmth and wit by award-winning actress Ellen DeGeneres, became the first gay leading character on series television. "The Puppy Episode" was watched by an estimated 42 million viewers and earned high praise from critics across the nation who hailed it as ". . . a minor miracle" (Daily Variety), "a positive milestone . . . inspired" (The Los Angeles Times), "groundbreaking . . . remarkable" (New York Daily News), and "inventive . . . courageous" (San Francisco Chronicle). Having run five seasons, both the series and its title character begin life anew as Ellen Morgan embarked on a challenging and comical quest to find her true niche in life. Having stood up for her principles by walking out on her job at Buy the Book, the thirtysomething, single urbanite now finds herself exploring a number of different occupations in a wholehearted attempt to find a career she can feel passionate about -- and pay the mortgage on her recently purchased dream home. She also grapples with her newfound sexual identity, hilariously trying to keep apprehension and angst at bay as she tentatively wades into the always-ominous dating pool. Coaching her from the sidelines are best friend Paige Clark (Joely Fisher), an egotistical but engaging movie executive who considers herself a femme fatale; cousin Spence Kovak (Jeremy Piven), a testosterone-driven doctor-in-residence who considers himself an expert on the fairer sex; annoying but adorable Audrey Penney (Clea Lewis), who seems to know everything about everything including -- inexplicably -- the gay scene; and acerbic master java-maker Joe Farrell (David Anthony Higgins), a straight arrow with a unique twist on life. The series was created by Carol Black, Neal Marlens and David Rosenthal. Vic Kaplan and Tim Doyle are the executive producers. "Ellen" is from The Black/Marlens Company in association with Touchstone Television. "Ellen" premiered as "These Friends of Mine" on March 29, 1994.
