Drew Carey
Drew on The Drew Carey Show

Drew Carey photo Drew Carey, the fictional character, is an average guy trying to make the best of his average life and job. But in reality, Drew Carey, the comedian, has a career that most would envy. He has accomplished a lot in his eight years as a stand-up comic.

In the Fall of 1985, Carey was living in Cleveland and working as a waiter. A disc jockey friend of his thought he was funny and offered to pay him if he ever came up with some funny ideas for his radio show. Carey found a book on how to write jokes at the local library and in January, 1986, he made good on his New Year's resolution to try them out on stage during an amateur night at a local comedy club. His first paid job doing stand-up was in April, 1986; and according to Carey, he "just barely" started making a living at comedy later that year.

A turning point in Carey's career was his first appearance on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson in 1991, when Johnny asked him to come over and sit on the couch after his set. Part of that performance is included in the "Best of Carson" home video. Since then, he wrote and starred in his own cable special, "Drew Carey: Human Cartoon," for which he won a CableACE Award. He was also nominated for a CableACE award in 1993 for his performance at the "Tenth Anniversary of the Montreal Comedy Festival." He recently co-wrote and starred in a cable special, "The Mr. Vegas All-Night Party."

In addition to starring in his self-titled sitcom, Carey is also creator and producer along with Bruce Helford. Carey met Helford when he co-starred on "The Good Life," where Helford was a consultant.

Carey is still fiercely loyal to his hometown and despises any team which happens to be competing against the Indians or Cavaliers. He has written his first book of short stories and anecdotes, "Dirty Jokes and Beer." Carey, who is single, purchased his childhood home in Cleveland and hopes to move back there someday.
