Ernie Hudson Sgt. Dep. John Henry Barnes on 10-8
With over 100 film and television credits on his resume, Ernie Hudson is a unique screen presence, capable of any role. He is most recognized for starring in the critically acclaimed HBO series, "Oz," which ran for six seasons and in which he played Warden Leo Glynn in the high-tech experimental unit of a maximum security prison. For this role, Hudson won the International Press Academy Golden Satellite Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Drama Series.Born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, a career as a performer seemed like an unlikely path for young Ernie Hudson, who was already married with a young son when he enrolled at Wayne State University as a Speech and English major. His early ambition was to be a writer, and for a time he served as resident playwright at Detroit's Concept East, the oldest black theater company in the country. Later he founded Actors Ensemble Theater, where he and other black performers staged and appeared in their own original works. After Wayne State, Hudson accepted a full scholarship to the prestigious Master of Fine Arts Program at Yale University as a writing and acting student, which led to a number of regional theater roles and critical acclaim, and to his feature film debut in "Leadbelly." Parts in other feature films followed, among them "The Main Event" with Barbra Streisand, "The Jazz Singer" with Neil Diamond, and also television projects like Abby Mann's acclaimed miniseries, "King," and the highly-rated "Roots II." Hudson alternated between film and television roles until 1983, when he was cast as Winston Zeddemore, the fourth member of the "Ghostbusters" team. He subsequently earned roles in films such as "Weeds" with Nick Nolte, "Leviathan," "The Hand that Rocks the Cradle," "Sugar Hill," "The Cowboy Way," "Speechless" and "The Basketball Diaries" (opposite Leonardo DiCaprio). He starred in the thriller "Congo," "The Crow," opposite the late Brandon Lee, and in the action thriller "No Escape," directed by Martin Campbell, who also directed the pilot episode of "10-8." Additional credits include playing the cigar-smoking caddy in "Miracle on the 17th Green"; a terrorist expert in TBS' "Nowhere to Land"; the President of the United States in the action film, "Stealth Fighter"; the late James Jordan in the Fox Family telefilm, "Michael Jordan: An American Hero"; a literary police detective in HBO's "Red Letters"; and co-starring in such projects as the thriller "The Watcher" with Keanu Reeves and the comedy "Miss Congeniality" with Sandra Bullock. This year Hudson returned to the stage in an acclaimed production of August Wilson's "King Hedley" at the Penumbra Theatre in Minneapolis, a city where, earlier in his career, he made a splash starring in a production of "The Great White Hope." When he's not working, Hudson likes to spend time relaxing at home with his wife and family, and remains committed to developing all facets of his creativity, including his writing.
